Another WWE Movie: John Cena and Renny Harlin Give Us 12 Rounds

When Vince McMahon decided to get into the movie business a couple of years ago, who would have thought that WWE Films would be able to put out flicks that are somewhat successful? Oh alright, I suppose it’s not that surprising, but let’s be clear: the moderate profitability of their films thus far is not an indicator of quality (even though Jay and Greg claim The Condemned was enjoyable). But now here’s something that actually is pretty surprising. For their next project, they have managed to attract a pretty big name director in the form of Renny Harlin (Die Hard 2, Deep Blue Sea, Driven).

This month Harlin will be teaming up with John Cena (The Marine) for a cop action vehicle called 12 Rounds, about a police detective in New Orleans whose girlfriend is kidnapped. On IMDB there are all kinds of wild rumours of people like Al Pacino, Dominic Purcell, and Method Man co-starring, but I have a feeling that’s all bogus. The only other confirmed co-stars at this point are Steve Harris (Minority Report), Aidan Gillen (The Wire) and Brian White (Stomp The Yard). So who’s excited for this (aside from Greg, I mean)? I suppose it could be fun. Heck, if I had my way, Renny Harlin would direct every WWE movie from here on in… just as long as he stays far away from classic franchises like The Exorcist! 12 Rounds heads into production on February 25th, and is currently slated for a 2009 release.

  • WWE have their own film production company? Wow. I remember seeing some reviews for The Condemned and it got absolutely slammed.

  • The only Renny Harlin movie I give a damn about is Die Hard 2, and in my opinion it’s the worst of the original three films. Based on how awful The Marine was, I can’t expect much from this film, though The Condemned was pretty fun to watch, but all in all nothing special. If nothing else, when you take an okay director and a terrible idea for a film, the two combined may create something halfway decent. I doubt it though.

  • Former WWE Champion John Cena will be starring in WWE Films’ next big project. The movie is called “12 Rounds” and it starts filming on 2/25 in New Orleans. Cena starred in the company’s most successful feature to date, “The Marine.”
