The Wolf Man Director Update: The Rat’s Out… Joe Johnston Is In

Alright everyone, you can quit your whining because Brett Ratner will not be taking over for Mark Romanek after all. Universal has wisely named Joe Johnston as the new director of The Wolf Man, and overall, I think he’s a pretty decent replacement. He’s best known for directing Jurassic Park III, Jumanji, and The Rocketeer, although his most recent movie was Hidalgo. He’s obviously at home in special effects-driven monster movies, but will he bring a more family-friendly angle to the flick? Probably more than Mark Romanek would have, although I don’t think this was meant to be an overly dark take on the classic story. Then again, the script was written by Andrew Kevin Walker (Seven, 8MM, Sleepy Hollow), so your guess is as good as mine. What do you think of Joe Johnston being in the driver’s seat?

  • I don’t know why people were so excited about Mark Romanek. I haven’t seen his first film but One Hour Photo was a bland film with a ridiculous Robin Williams performance and it added nothing to the stalker genre.

I’m sure Joe Johnston or Bret Ratner or whoever will do just as well. There’s already a perfect wolfman movie, it’s called An American Werewolf in London.

  • Jumanji’s okay for what it is and I love The Rocketeer, but Jurassic Park III was shit. This doesn’t necessarily good or bad news. Right now this film is up in the air for me. I’ll have to wait for a trailer to get excited, I suppose.
