Next month’s release of Doug Liman’s movie Jumper is being anticipated by some as the first major blockbuster of the year. Whether or not it can actually draw more viewers than Cloverfield (or even Rambo) remains to be seen, but the trailers have certainly done a good job of showcasing some high-energy action scenes and cutting edge special effects. I have to admit that I’m looking forward to it, even if the story seems a bit… juvenile.
It turns out the movie is actually based on a young adult novel by Steve Gould, which might explain part of the vibe I am getting from it. I won’t hold that against the movie though… I’d certainly rather see something like Jumper on the big screen than say, The Spiderwick Chronicles (which actually comes out on the same day).
If you’re interested in getting a head start on the movie and don’t feel like reading a book written for “young adults”, you might want to check out the comic book prequel that is being released by Oni Press. It hits stores the same week as the movie, but they have a free 22 page preview online right now. Jumper: Jumpscars was written by Nunzio DeFilippis & Christina Weir (New X-Men, Checkmate) and fills in some of the backstory of the centuries old war between the Jumpers and the Paladins.
