New To Theatres This Weekend – Jan. 18, 2008

At last the day has arrived… 01-18-08, the number that once was a mystery, and that which we now know as the release date of Cloverfield! Although reviews on the web have been fantastic, it’s currently sitting at 77% on Rotten Tomatoes… which isn’t bad. Going up against it this weekend is the Katherine Heigl romantic comedy 27 Dresses and the Queen Latifah crime comedy Mad Money (not to be confused with the Damon Wayans classic Mo’ Money). Certainly not much competition in the same demographic, but can The Bucket List or First Sunday have another strong weekend? We’ll see.

In limited release we also have the Pam Anderson/Denise Richards comedy Blonde and Blonder, Woody Allen’s Cassandra’s Dream, and Alex Gibney’s Iraq documentary Taxi to the Dark Side.

  • I’m going to check out Cloverfield tonight and if it’s good enough to see a second time, I already have someone trying to rope me into going again tomorrow. Here’s hoping it at least comes close to living up to the hype.

  • Yeah, we’re seeing Cloverfield tomorrow. I’m not sure anything else is going to be making much money this weekend. Even my parents have heard about this thing.

    saw Cloverfield.

It’s a lot of fun! Good popcorn flick with plenty of thrills, and of course, cheese. Many ‘dont go in the basement’ tension scenes and breathers. It plays out like you kind of expect it would, however the fake doc gimmick works with this material, they leave a good amount of mystery, and it feels like an amusement ride overall. Many times I wished it had those seats you get that are raised and move with the screen. I gave it 4.5 out of 5 stars with an asterisk.. as in its not really a 4.5 out of 5 movie, but the fun and experience I had from it earns it bonus points.

if you see it in theater (i saw it in digital which was great) it will have more entertainment value

I saw a midnight showing of Cloverfield last night and the theater was packed. It was one awesome roller-coaster ride of a movie.

“if you see it in theater (i saw it in digital which was great) it will have more entertainment value”

One of my friends who I saw it with said that, Oh I can’t wait to see this on Blu-Ray. I immediately said that this is coming out on HD, its Paramount. I then saw extreme sadness on his face, hehe. But who knows how long Paramount&Universal will stick with HD.
