Another Possible Quentin Tarantino Project: Faster Pussycat! Kill! Kill! Remake
Let me start this post by saying I’m a big fan of Quentin Tarantino, but I’m not such a big fan of his rock star persona. He’s done more than just about any other director to raise awareness of independent film and obscure cult classics, but let’s face it… the man is a media whore. He’s always talking loudly about how he wants to do this or do that, but these ideas almost ever seem to materialize. What happened to that Kill Bill prequel he’s been talking about, or The Vega Brothers prequel, or his remake of Come Drink With Me? Better yet, when are we ever going to see his WWII flick Inglorious Bastards?
It is for this reason that when I read reports of Quentin Tarantino talking up a new remake of Russ Meyer’s sexploitation classic Faster Pussycat! Kill! Kill!, I wasn’t quite sure how seriously to take them. According to Liz Smith at Variety, QT has already picked his top casting choices for the three female stars: Kim Kardashian, Eva Mendes and… Britney Spears. Sounds like he was inspired by Richard Kelly’s gimmicky ass-backwards casting in Southland Tales.
Assuming this is actually under serious consideration and not just a throwaway comment, I know Tarantino would do a fine job with such a remake. Supposedly he wants to make it even raunchier, which is interesting considering that the original is borderline soft-core porn. (I guess there would have to be a heck of a lot of missing reels if he actually expects it to play in theatres across North America.) The thing is, after the whole Grindhouse fiasco, does he really want to return to this kind of material so quickly? Something tells me his buddies at The Weinstein Company wouldn’t be overly enthusiastic about it. To be honest, it even seems a bit redundant to me, but then again, I’ve never seen the original. I am putting my money on the fact that this will never actually come to pass, but if it does, do you think anyone would actually go see it?
