There have been a lot of post-apocalyptic stories showing up in theatres over the past couple of years, inspired in part by the popularity of the new wave of zombie movies like 28 Days Later. Being that I’m a big fan of the genre, I’m certainly not complaining, although I wouldn’t blame people who thought they were starting to see the same movie over and over again.
Next in line is Doomsday, written and directed by Neil Marshall (The Descent). The story involves the outbreak of yet another deadly plague, but this time the victims aren’t turned into mindless monsters… they just get sick (and presumably die). At some point, the government decides to quarantine a large part of England and build a wall around it. This solution works for a while, but when the plague returns, a military team is dispatched beyond the wall in search of clues for a cure. What they find is a dangerous subculture straight out of all your classic post-apocalyptic flicks; bad ass gangs not unlike those seen in movies like Escape From New York, Mad Max and Class of Nuke ‘em High.
Oh yes, about halfway through the trailer for Doomsday I started to get pretty excited. This may not have much in common with The Descent, but Neil Marshall is bringing back the cult sci-fi/action flicks of yesteryear, warts and all. Doomsday looks like it will offer a lot of action, a little bit of a cheese, and one hell of a good time. Check out the trailer below and see what you think.
