New To Theatres This Weekend – Jan. 11, 2008

We’re settling into a bit of a slow period for new movies right now, as some of the Oscar contenders start to expand out to more theatres, and studios aren’t releasing much new stuff in the meantime. Uwe Boll’s In The Name of the King finally gets a wide release this week, as does the new Ice Cube comedy First Sunday, and the new Jack Nicholson/Morgan Freeman feel good comedy The Bucket List. Atonement, The Kite Runner and The Orphanage are all creeping into a few more theatres, while P.T. Anderson’s There Will Be Blood continues to expand about as slowly as possible. And then there’s this VeggieTales movie, a new animated flick that probably has the lowest production values of any CG movie I’ve ever seen in theatres.

Atonement (semi-wide)
The Bucket List
First Sunday
In the Name of the King: A Dungeon Siege Tale
The Kite Runner (expanding)
Pirates Who Don’t Do Anything: A VeggieTales Movie
The Orphanage (expanding)
Summer Palace (limited)
There Will Be Blood (expanding)

  • I wish you would stop doing these posts, because so often they just make me furious with envy. There Will Be Blood isn’t out untill the end of february here. Atonement is another month for me.

To be fair though, some stuff gets screened out. Uwe Boll is not opening here, ever. That animated shit though – out IN A THEATRE NEAR YOU. Go hide.

  • I’ll finally get a chance to see There Will Be Blood. And yes, I’m also planning to venture out for Boll’s debacle – my first experience with the director – ever. Should be a hoot.

  • I’m waiting this week out in preparation for Cloverfield and Rambo in the near future.

Yea I hope Cloverfield is as good as the previews make it look.

  • My hopes weren’t too high for Cloverfield based on the trailers and clips I’d seen online, then I had to go and read Harry’s review on AICN where he makes it sound like the best, most perfect movie ever captured on film, and now my expectations are about as high as they could possibly be. Here’s hoping that the movie stands up to the hype. I’d hate to think that we might have another Snakes on a Plane on our hands here with amazing internet buzz and no hope whatsoever of actually meeting that high of a standard.
