John McTiernan and Gerard Butler Being Considered for New Conan Movie?
Here’s a wacky little rumour that seems to have come way out of left field, but I thought it was intriguing enough that it deserved mention. There’s been speculation about a new Conan movie for a few years now, and although it seems highly unlikely that Arnold Schwarzenegger would ever be involved, mark my words: Conan will return to the big screen one way or another. There have been some video games and comic books based on the Conan property recently released, and ever since the success of 300, sword and sandals epics are back in vogue again. There is just too much good synergy out there right now for a studio to let this one get away.
Now, here’s where it gets a bit fuzzy. French website Mad Movies is reporting that Die Hard director John McTiernan is at the top of the list of filmmakers being considered by New Line for the next Conan flick. As we previously reported, John McTiernan is headed to prison for 4 months, but realistically, 4 months isn’t all that long. So technically it’s possible, and McTiernan seems well-suited for the project (he did direct The 13th Warrior after all). The other part of the rumour is that Gerard Butler is being considered for the role of Conan. I don’t know if I believe that part so much. It just seems a little too obvious, and would Butler really let himself get typecast like that? Well, I suppose it all depends on the paycheck. Is this a Conan movie you’d like to see? We’ll keep our ear to the ground and report on any future Conan details as they come to light.
