Bruce Willis to Star in Jonathan Mostow’s Comic Book Adaptation The Surrogates

After Brett Ratner and Gerard Butler ditched the Escape From New York remake, it was reported that Jonathan Mostow (Terminator 3: Rise of the Machines) would rewrite the script and possibly direct. This is now looking unlikely, at least for the near future, as Mostow has signed on for a new project with Touchstone Pictures that will start production early next year. The Surrogates is based on the 5-issue comic book mini-series by Robert Venditti and Brett Weldele, which takes place in the year 2054, with a pair of detectives trying to stop a techno-terrorist bent on destroying what are known as “surrogates” — widespread androids that interact for people in the real world, taking on any physical form they want. Bruce Willis has just signed on to star, and Michael Ferris and John Brancato (Terminator 3: Rise of the Machines, The Net, Catwoman) will write the script. This totally sounds like my kind of science-fiction flick, and although I could definitely see the team involved in this turning it into a clumsy action movie, I’ll probably give it the benefit of the doubt. The Surrogates is expected to start filming in Boston this February.
