Alright, now here’s something that reeks of “unsubstantiated rumour”, but suffice it to say there are crazier ideas floating around out there in Hollywood lately, so who knows, maybe there is some truth to it. Bloody Disgusting received a tip last week that someone is trying to get a Planet of the Apes prequel off the ground — that is, a prequel to Tim Burton’s Planet of the Apes. Burton himself would have nothing to do with it, obviously, and so a call has been put out to directors who may be interested in the project.
I will be the first to admit that Tim Burton’s remake was ill-conceived and, for the most part, poorly executed as well. I’m generally a fan of Burton but it was the biggest misstep of his career thus far. That said, I think that perhaps this prequel idea deserves some consideration, if only because the Planet of the Apes universe is so rich, and it likely wouldn’t involve Tim Burton or Mark Wahlberg or anyone else from the 2001 flick. A quick look around the web turned up a couple of Planet of the Apes books written in 2002 and 2003 by William Thomas Quick, which are prequels of sorts, so perhaps they would serve as the source material? Either way, I’ll go against my gut and say that I’m not going to write this off just yet. Thoughts?
