If you’re as curious as I am about Richard Kelly’s upcoming film Southland Tales, you might want to get a head start on the story by reading the graphic novels written by Kelly and illustrated by Brett Weldele. Comic book prequels are becoming a pretty common way to market a film, and to get people hooked before the movie comes out. As long as the comics are decent and not necessarily required reading, then I’m all for it! The way Kelly envisioned the Southland Tales story is in 6 parts, with the first three being released in comic book form by Graphitti Designs, and the movie comprising the final three. All 3 graphic novels have been available for a while now, but have just recently been re-released as a single compendium called Southland Tales: The Prequel Saga.
In order to further help promote the film, all of Book I (entitled Two Roads Diverge) has just been released online this week through five different websites. The first two parts are available in PDF format, while the others must be read online. Aside from that small annoyance, they are completely free. I have yet to locate the provider of the 5th installment, but it’s supposed to go live today. I’ll update the links as soon as I find it. In the meantime, click over, read and let us know what you think!
