The Exorcist Remake In The Works?
It feels like almost every week for the past two or three years we’ve been hearing a new rumour or announcement about an old horror movie getting remade, and every time I think to myself: they’ve now officially run out of classic horror movies to remake. But then somehow they find more. And more. And more. Well, if this latest rumour (and that’s all it is right now, a rumour) turns out to be true, I think this has to be where we draw the line!
There are certain movies that just shouldn’t be remade, and out of all the horror movies in the world I think that The Exorcist is right near the top of that list. There’s just something about that original movie that goes beyond being merely scary… it’s as if the movie has a presence or a life of its own. Everything about the film’s production and time period in which it was made adds up to something much greater than the sum of its parts. A remake could never in a million years reproduce the unique atmosphere and eerie sense of overwhelming evil. They re-released the original movie as The Exorcist: The Version You’ve Never Seen back in 2000, and it was a great experience to get to see it on the big screen (even though I wasn’t a huge fan of the new cut). The Renny Harlin prequel Exorcist: The Beginning and even Paul Schrader’s cut Dominion are proof that you simply can’t recreate the feel of the original and it’s futile to even try. The talk of a remake supposedly comes from a recent horror and sci-fi festival where Linda Blair introduced a screening of the film and gave the crowd the inside scoop. Let’s hope this turns out to be bogus.
