Star Trek XI Casting Bombshell: Simon Pegg is Scotty

Wow, I don’t think anyone saw this coming. Despite strong rumours in the past stating that James McAvoy had been tipped to star as Enterprise engineer Montgomery “Scotty” Scott, today it was announced that Shaun of the Dead/Hot Fuzz star Simon Pegg has landed the role in J.J. Abrams’ upcoming Star Trek film. Other casting confirmations that have come out this week include Eric Bana as the movie’s villain, a mysterious character named Nero, and John Cho (Harold & Kumar Go to White Castle) as Sulu.

As much as Pegg’s involvement is exciting, and should guarantee some solid comic relief in the film, the more I sit back and look at the cast that is developing, the more I wonder what the heck kind of movie they are planning here. I mean, seriously… Harold from Harold & Kumar??? Even if the guy can act dramatically, which I’m sure he can, it’s going to be hard to get past imagining Mr. Sulu as a serious pothead up there on screen. Even Simon Pegg, who I think proved he had a lot of range in Run, Fat Boy Run, is going to be more than a bit distracting. It’s clear now that they’re not limiting themselves to unknowns, and it’s almost like they’re just going for actors with an established geek fanbase. There are still two major roles left to cast, which are Hank McCoy and James T. Kirk. The latest Kirk rumour sees another young hottie, Chris Pine, possibly taking the captain’s seat. Are you happy with how the Enterprise crew is coming together? Or is this just shaping up to be Felicity in space?

    not a good cast choice

My friend, Erich “Mancow” Muller, host of Freedom Radio Network’s The Mancow Show (a.k.a., “Mancow’s Morning Madness”), called at 6:25 a.m. today and recommended that I follow up my Don’t Taze Me, Bro!â„¢ line of merchandise with a new line to coincide with recent news that a new Star Trek movie is in the works.

Since 8 to 10 million listeners in 30 radio markets were listening to my live-on-air conversation with Mancow, I decided to take him up on his suggestion. Thus was born Mancow’s idea: Don’t Phaze Me, Bro!â„¢.

  • It sure seems like they are not trying to impress fanboys, but trying to win new fans, and in that case I’m in. I love Simon Pegg and
I think he’s great in the Big Nothing. Why not? It could work.

  • Bob take your stupid advertisement somewhere else.

This is getting worse and worse. He’s not even anywhere near the same age as the other actors cast! (Well… I didn’t look it up so I might be surprised) Who gives a shit about Simon Pegg? I was never a huge fan of the original series, but at least it didn’t have a comic relief character!

This movie is getting better and better.

I think Darth Nameless just hung himself.

  • Greg you’re so mean.
