Wow, I don’t think anyone saw this coming. Despite strong rumours in the past stating that James McAvoy had been tipped to star as Enterprise engineer Montgomery “Scotty” Scott, today it was announced that Shaun of the Dead/Hot Fuzz star Simon Pegg has landed the role in J.J. Abrams’ upcoming Star Trek film. Other casting confirmations that have come out this week include Eric Bana as the movie’s villain, a mysterious character named Nero, and John Cho (Harold & Kumar Go to White Castle) as Sulu.
As much as Pegg’s involvement is exciting, and should guarantee some solid comic relief in the film, the more I sit back and look at the cast that is developing, the more I wonder what the heck kind of movie they are planning here. I mean, seriously… Harold from Harold & Kumar??? Even if the guy can act dramatically, which I’m sure he can, it’s going to be hard to get past imagining Mr. Sulu as a serious pothead up there on screen. Even Simon Pegg, who I think proved he had a lot of range in Run, Fat Boy Run, is going to be more than a bit distracting. It’s clear now that they’re not limiting themselves to unknowns, and it’s almost like they’re just going for actors with an established geek fanbase. There are still two major roles left to cast, which are Hank McCoy and James T. Kirk. The latest Kirk rumour sees another young hottie, Chris Pine, possibly taking the captain’s seat. Are you happy with how the Enterprise crew is coming together? Or is this just shaping up to be Felicity in space?
