The Poughkeepsie Tapes Trailer
Looks like low budget documentary-style horror movies are making a big comeback as of late, with Behind The Mask: The Rise of Leslie Vernon gaining quite a following, and also Spanish zombie flick REC generating a lot of positive buzz. Now here’s another one to add to the list: The Poughkeepsie Tapes. The idea behind this one is the most believable of all, in that it is supposedly based on recovered tapes from a serial killer known as the Water Street Butcher, who killed people in Poughkeepsie, NY for over ten years. The problem, as I see it, is that unlike The Blair Witch Project, which immerses you in the perspective of the filmmakers who are lost in the woods, this movie simply presents footage of a serial killer torturing his victims. Isn’t the torture porn trend already dead? How will this actually be scary?
Still, if you’re a fan of the Saw series, there’s probably something here for you. It seems as though this is being done as a fake documentary using clips of the recovered footage, rather than the footage actually being the entire film (which is probably a smart move). On a related note, director John Erick Dowdle has already been lined up to direct the American remake of REC. I’m not sure how wide this movie’s release will be, but it was picked up by MGM apparently, and will hit theatres sometime in February. Check out the trailer below.
