Brett Ratner to Direct Escape From New York Remake

Remember that Escape From New York remake that Len Wiseman was supposed to be directing? Well it turns out he’s not doing it anymore, and instead one Mr. Brett Ratner has officially signed on for the gig. It may sound like some sort of sick joke, but alas, it has apparently been confirmed by IESB who say it is “100% fact”. How Brett Ratner continues to get jobs like this is beyond me. I’m not saying he’s not a competent director, or even that I hated all of his previous movies. I think I was in the minority of people who thought he didn’t do anything wrong with X-Men: The Last Stand. But the fact of the matter is, people love to hate Brett Ratner nowadays, and when you’re dealing with a remake that is already being seen as unnecessary and foolish, why on earth would you attach one of the most hated directors to the project???

All that aside, I don’t see him as being any worse than Len Wiseman for the job, but this movie is quickly becoming equivalent to the Assault on Precinct 13 remake in my eyes. I still haven’t seen it, and I really have no interest in seeing it because I can’t see how it possibly has any connection to the original outside of the name. I suppose I am a little bit curious to see what Gerard Butler will do with the role, but the bottom line is that it’s not going to feel anything like John Carpenter’s Escape From New York. That is probably what the studio wants, but if that’s the case then why even bother doing a remake?

  • Great. Just went from bad to freakin’ worse.

  • I preferred Die Hard 4 to every Ratner film I’ve seen aside from perhaps Red Dragon, so I’m disappointed to hear that he’s now replacing Wiseman on the project. This is not to say that I think Wiseman was a great choice, but he’s certainly better than Ratner in my mind.

As far as the Assault On Precint 13 remake, I quite liked it. It was very similar in tone and plot to the original, but with a new twist on the events. Also Ethan Hawke and Lawrence Fishburne were both good in it. As far as action movies go, I’d say it’s worth giving it a watch.

  • Nemesis

Oh dear, what’s next on the table, a Prince Of Darkness or They Live Remake? Please, just leave these movies alone, they were such iconic 80s movies..

Besides, what year is gonna be set in now? what’s the point…

  • I don’t there’s any way he can screw it up. Escape from New York sucks pretty bad. Don’t get me wrong, I love the fim, but it’s a really bad movie so it’s not like he’s helming the remake of Laurence of Arabia.
