Serenity Sequel a Possibility? I’ll Believe It When I See It

Oh, those poor Browncoats. It seems like every couple of months someone is starting another rumour about the possibility of a new Firefly TV series or a sequel to the Serenity feature film, and every time it turns out to be bogus. The story of Joss Whedon’s short-lived sci-fi series is filled with highs and lows, and last we heard, the theatrical failure of Serenity had essentially put the nail in the coffin for the Captain Reynolds and his crew. But wait! Now a sequel might actually happen! For real this time!

It turns out that this little rumour comes from the mouth of Alan Tudyk (Wash) who claims that the new Serenity Special Edition DVD has been selling so well that it’s gotten the attention of some studio execs. “They had to put [the new DVD] out because they’ve been selling out of the other one and so Universal’s like ‘So, let’s do another one’. And now… there’s now a chance there’s going to be another movie.” Let me be the first to say, I’ll believe it when I see it. While this story is probably going to get fans all worked up (yet again), I think it’s mostly just wishful thinking. After all, once the studio realizes that the strong sales are actually just due to hardcore Firefly fans buying 10 copies of the DVD each, they might reconsider. Seriously though, Tudyk did hint that a direct to DVD movie could be a possibility, and that would definitely be less of a risk. The question remains though, if Firefly has so many fans, why did Serenity bomb at the box office? Is another movie really financially viable? I don’t see it happening personally, but I guess this gives all those Firefly podcasts out there something new to talk about for another couple of months.

  • I really hope so, but (SPOILER) Wash (Tudyk) dies in Serenity, so I’m not really sure how reliable this is.
