Jessica Biel Out of Justice League Movie… Tyrese Gibson In?

Despite the potentially misleading headline, Tyrese Gibson is not, in fact, up for the role of Wonder Woman in the upcoming Justice League movie. But according to Mania.com, he may be in the running to star as Green Lantern instead. From this we can probably deduce that they are going with John Stewart as Green Lantern, who is also the character seen in the Justice League animated series. (Sorry Jables… I think that counts you out.)

As for Jessica Biel, it seems she had second thoughts and decided to turn down the Wonder Woman offer after all, although no one is quite sure why. Apparently she was very close to signing on the dotted line, so this comes as a bit of a surprise. In the end it’s probably for the best since Ryan Reynolds is still the name being bandied about for The Flash… and did we really need to see that reunion of Blade: Trinity alumni? I am still surprised at how many recognizable names are being considered, but I just hope they can nail down a cast soon… all these wild rumours are starting to hurt the credibility of the film.

Tyrese is a dick, on top of being a bad actor. I simply do not understand why he gets any roles, let alone high-profile stuff like this. I hope this doesn’t happen.

  • I’m constantly unhappy with just about all of the news I’m hearing about a JLA movie. I suppose I’m biased because I’d rather not see it happen at all, but I didn’t like the idea of Biel as Wonder Woman, I don’t like Ryan Reynolds as The Flash, I don’t want to see an actor other than Christian Bale as Batman in between Bale-starring Batman flicks, I don’t particularly think Brandon Routh was a very good Superman, but I have the same feelings about his actor/character situation that I do about Batman, and finally I have no real opinions on Tyrese Gibson, but I’d much rather see either Kyle Rayner or Hal Jordan in a JLA film than John Stewart if it’s going to happen. I think that both Jordan and Rayner are more interesting, driven characters than Stewart, and whenever I see Stewart on the team in non-current-comic-continuity projects such as the cartoon, all I can think is that the creators went with a weaker character just to put a black guy on the team.

In the end though, I’d just rather not see this movie get made. As I’ve said before, make a Wonder Woman movie, make Flash, Martian Man Hunter, Green Lantern, and Aquaman movies, keep making Batman and Superman movies, but don’t try to put them together in one film. It just feels like a doomed project. Can they do any of these characters justice (no pun intended) in two hours with all of them onscreen, plus origin stories, ancillary characters, and villains? Even with a three hour film I find it hard to believe that this could work, and a lot of people would surely be put off by a film of that length as it is.

The only reasonable argument that I’ve heard for this movie being made is that X-Men dealt with a team but still turned out okay, but I think the key word there is “okay”. Since those characters are mutants they didn’t even have to bother with telling any real origin stories, but half of the characters in that first X-Men film were shit and had little to no character development anyway. Just imagine that film on a grander scale with some seriously cheesy un-matching bright colored costumes. I just can’t wrap my head around it. Mind you, I’d love to be proven wrong, but I’ll be a non-believer until the day that this comes out (if it comes out at all, that is).

I’m of the opinion that Ryan Reynolds is perfect casting for Wally West/Flash.

  • Has it been confirmed if it’s Wally West or Barry Allen? Though I guess if they’re going with a black GL (there’s that quota again) it would have to be WW, according to canon?

  • By the way, I always thought Guy Gardner was the coolest GL!

  • “By the way, I always thought Guy Gardner was the coolest GL!”

That’s part of the reason why I commented in a previous post that I think WB should be making a JLI movie instead of JLA. Guy Gardener, Blue Beetle, Booster Gold, Batman, and Martian Manhunter? That’s the perfect cast of characters for a great action/comedy. Who could do Guy justice on the big screen, though? And who could pull off that bowl cut of his?

  • Whats JLI?

I think Paul Giamatti should play Guy Gardner. And Sylvester Stallone should be Blue Beetle.

  • JLI is Justice League International, the Justice League book that Guy Gardener used to be a part of which spawned I Can’t Believe It’s Not The Justice League and Formerly Known As The Justice League.

Guy Gardener has to be fit and full of himself because of it. I don’t see Paul Giamatti in that role.

  • I was being half sarcastic with that. Though I do think he can do anything.

The one line that sums up Guy Gardner for me though, is when he interrupted a speach by Captain Marvel at JLA headquarters saying “Shut the hell up and eat your jellybeans.”
