HBO’s Deadwood Movies are Dead in the Water
When the third season of David Milch’s foul-mouthed HBO series Deadwood wrapped up last year, fans were sort of left hanging. The show was not renewed for a full 4th season, and Milch reportedly turned down an offer for a shortened final season to tie up loose ends. Then a ray of light appeared as both sides agreed upon a satisfactory solution: the series would conclude with a pair of two-hour made for TV movies that would air on HBO next year. Well, here we are a year later, and there’s been nary a mention of these supposed Deadwood movies. Milch had been busy working on his now-defunct existential surfer show John From Cincinnati, and actor Ian McShane has finally broken the sad news that Deadwood is pretty much… well, dead.
In an interview with Cinematical, McShane revealed that the Deadwood ranch has been recently dismantled, and that with the impending Hollywood strike and other commitments from the various cast members, the making of a Deadwood finale is damn near impossible at this point. “It was one of those one-off jobs that you do which has got an extraordinary creative brain behind it, and it kept getting better, and the actors were great. It was a fabulous place to be and work. It was a workshop cum theater cum film. It was an extraordinary time. But everything has to come to an end, babe.” RIP Deadwood. Well, at least now I know that I can wait another 10 years for the DVD box sets to come down to a reasonable price and I won’t be missing a thing.
