Lars and the Real Girl Trailer Starring Ryan Gosling

Lars is a socially awkward guy whose life gets turned upside down when he meets the girl of his dreams on the internet. The thing is, none of family and friends know quite how to react because the girl is not actually a girl at all… she’s a life-size doll. This may sound like the basis for Adam Sandler’s next comedy, but it’s actually an independent film written by Nancy Oliver (Six Feet Under) and directed by Craig Gillespie (Mr. Woodcock). Ryan Gosling, fresh off his Academy Award nomination for Half Nelson stars as Lars, which could either be a brilliant career move or a bit of a misstep — I’m unsure which at this point. I do think Gosling is talented enough to know how to keep the humour partly subdued, while also making us care about the character. The film is clearly treading in “dramady” territory, as it seems quite goofy but also treats Lars’ problems seriously. Check out the trailer and see what you think. Lars and the Real Girl hits theatres on October 12th, 2007.

  • This looks pretty good. I’m more excited to see Paul Schneider in there. Two films with ‘the Real Girls’ in the title. It’s an omen.

I don’t know let’s call it: Mannequin III or is it IV (Jay I’m lookin to you buddy to come up with a stellar subtitle here). Suspension of disbelief can only go sofar. This premise seem pretty ridiculous for the kind of light dramaedy that the trailer is making it out to be. I could see it if the dummy was a joke in the first act but carrying it through for the entire feature … that’s a deal breaker. I mean that only gives them like 10 minutes to bring in the actual “real girl”.
