Paul Haggis’ In the Valley of Elah Trailer

There are a lot of conflicting opinions on Paul Haggis; some people think the man is a genius, while other people think he’s one of the most overrated filmmakers working in Hollywood right now. So far he’s known mostly for his work as a writer (Million Dollar Baby, Letters from Iwo Jima, Casino Royale), but of course his 2004 film Crash also just happened to win Best Picture at the Academy Awards that year. Now everyone will be watching to see if he can woo critics again with his next film In the Valley of Elah, starring Tommy Lee Jones, Charlize Theron, Susan Sarandon and James Franco. When a soldier returns from Iraq (oooh, topical!) and goes AWOL, his father (Jones) recruits the help of a detective (Theron) to investigate. The cast is certainly solid, but I’m not sure I need to see Paul Haggis get up on a soapbox and preach about the war in Iraq. On the other hand, maybe I’m reading into this too much and it will just end up being a decent mystery/drama. What do you think? In the Valley of Elah hits theatres on September 14th.

I’m with you on this one. The middle part of the trailer looks like it might be a good murder/mystery (who knows might just be A Few Good Men or The General’s Daughter kind of thing). Then the end seems to drift into the pretentious/preachy mode. We’ll see, I think what Haggis did with Crash telling a story that could have been very preachy but really wasn’t could happen here too.
