Young X-Men Spin-Off In The Works?

By now we’ve all heard about the Magneto and Wolverine films that are on the way, but according to X2 writer Zak Penn, there is another X-Men spin-off that might be happening in the not too distant future. In a recent interview with Cinematical, he revealed that he had been approached to do a “Young X-Men” movie. He is currently in discussions with Fox about this project, and he says that a guy named Mike Chamoy, who worked with him on X-Men: The Last Stand came up with a cool idea for the movie. “He came up with how to do a young X-Men movie which is not what you’d expect. We’ll see; I still have to talk to Fox, set the story down … and then it will take a year — maybe two years — to get together. Put it this way, if you agree to do one of the X-Men movies, it could end up happening four or five years down the line. Which is fine with me; it’s just not my focus right now.”

Well, all I can say is, I hope it’s won’t turn out like Teen Titans or something to that effect. I’m going to guess that the twist may be that it won’t be a prequel, but some sort of time travel gimmick allowing older X-Men to revisit when they were younger. With all these spin-offs though, I have to wonder if they’re going to be running the X-Men franchise into the ground. If they spread it out over too many people, they won’t have any quality control and a consistent vision of the X-Men universe may be lost. On the other hand, maybe it will be cool to see different filmmakers offer new takes on the characters. What do you think, is this something you’re interested in? Personally I’m just stoked to see Penn’s new movie The Grand, which got a very favourable review from Cinematical as well.

this might be interesting, i would like to see a fourth Xmen, because i think that the series got better as it went on. i believe that the young xmen would be better suited as a tv series instead.

  • Hmmm…
    not interested.

However, I would not mind Jubilee heading a new version of Generation X…(forgetting the TV movie from the 90’s)…or a DTV solo film with Collosus…anything…

    BUT THIS.

  • I agree on the Colossus comment in that I wish he was featured more prominantly in the films. He’s a great character.

Although i’m not a Whedon fan, I did like his handling of the Colossus/Kitty Pride relationship in the Astonishing X Men comics. I think that’s something that would translate well to film.

Well, while I do wanna see another X-Men movie, mostly to see if they can do better then X3 and get the series back on track from pointless story telling, thanks Ratner. I’m not so sure about a X-Men meets Smallville flick.

I mean teen super heros really only go so far. For one they’ll all still be learning they’re powers. Witch is cool, but would feel more like a tease after the first 3 X=films with grown up characters fully useing they’re powers.

Also theres enuff winny teen stuff on TV and in films already. It would just be a more grown up version of that film Sky High I think. I do agree, I’m a big fan of Collosus as well, but it be better if they just did a retake on the X-Men movie series all together. They’re were so many great characters that were waisted in the films, like Collosus.

Also, I wish they’d make an X-Force movie. The darker, more serious X-Men team. I actualy wanna see that more then X4. Just cuz I’m too scarred of how a new X-Men film will turn out atm. Plus I’m just dying to see Mr. badass himself, Cable on the big screen. >_

Er, so this is just “The New Mutants” basically? They should use that title too. How awesome would it be if they adapted the classic Claremont/Sienkiewicz storyline from the late 80’s? Warlock would be a great character to use if they get it right.
