Young X-Men Spin-Off In The Works?
By now we’ve all heard about the Magneto and Wolverine films that are on the way, but according to X2 writer Zak Penn, there is another X-Men spin-off that might be happening in the not too distant future. In a recent interview with Cinematical, he revealed that he had been approached to do a “Young X-Men” movie. He is currently in discussions with Fox about this project, and he says that a guy named Mike Chamoy, who worked with him on X-Men: The Last Stand came up with a cool idea for the movie. “He came up with how to do a young X-Men movie which is not what you’d expect. We’ll see; I still have to talk to Fox, set the story down … and then it will take a year — maybe two years — to get together. Put it this way, if you agree to do one of the X-Men movies, it could end up happening four or five years down the line. Which is fine with me; it’s just not my focus right now.”
Well, all I can say is, I hope it’s won’t turn out like Teen Titans or something to that effect. I’m going to guess that the twist may be that it won’t be a prequel, but some sort of time travel gimmick allowing older X-Men to revisit when they were younger. With all these spin-offs though, I have to wonder if they’re going to be running the X-Men franchise into the ground. If they spread it out over too many people, they won’t have any quality control and a consistent vision of the X-Men universe may be lost. On the other hand, maybe it will be cool to see different filmmakers offer new takes on the characters. What do you think, is this something you’re interested in? Personally I’m just stoked to see Penn’s new movie The Grand, which got a very favourable review from Cinematical as well.
