Silver Surfer is Larry Fishburne, Galactus is a Cloud?

Last week there were reports that Laurence Fishburne had been hired to provide the voice for Galactus the Devourer of Worlds in the upcoming Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer. At the time it seemed to fit; he has that booming voice of authority that one would expect from a being that chows down on entire planets. Everyone would probably associate the voice with Morpheus from The Matrix, but with some fancy voice enhancements I think it would have worked out. Unfortunately it seems the story was only partially true, and today it was announced that Fishburne will actually be voicing the Silver Surfer instead — a role that doesn’t work as well in my mind. Either way I guess this explains why we never heard the Surfer talk in the teaser trailer. Fishburne starts recording his lines this week.

Now, this second bit of news is what really has fanboys tossing their cookies. According to a scooper at Ain’t It Cool News, the visual representation of Galactus has been finalized for the film, and it seems he will not be a giant dude wearing space armor, but rather… a storm cloud. Assuming this is true, I guess they went the route of Galactus being an abstract entity, perceived differently by all those who see him (and honestly, that’s not a huge stretch from the comic book canon as I understand it). However… I don’t buy it. Before you go and fire off your angry letters to Fox let me remind you that this is just a wild and crazy rumour. It’s definitely possible, but I don’t think they’re stupid enough to think fans will let them get away with representing Galactus as simply a storm cloud. It just seems like fanboys are getting worked up over something that they may not fully grasp yet (what else is new). On the other hand, there’s an interview with Avi Arad in 2005 where he says, and I quote, “Galactus is a force of nature, not a being. That’s all I’m saying.” Maybe they really are that stupid.

I own and like the first movie. I liked the trailer for the new one, I will see this in the theatre.

Hopefully the guy who plays the thing will stay as the thing in this one though. Talk about no presence.
