Ed Norton is Bruce Banner in The Incredible Hulk

Here’s a pretty big announcement coming out of the Marvel camp this morning. The next high profile comic book movie is starting to take shape… I’m talking about the upcoming reboot of the Hulk franchise, The Incredible Hulk, which is going to be attracting a lot more attention now that Edward Norton has been cast in the lead role! That’s right, it looks like all the whispers of names like Dominic Purcell, Brendan Fraser and Adrien Brody simply had no substance to them. Ed Norton is the man. As previously announced, The Transporter director Louis Leterrier will be taking the reins on the project, with Zak Penn (X2: X-Men United, Elektra, Behind Enemy Lines) writing the script.

I have to admit, in my mind this movie was just going to be a second-rate action movie in the realm of the Fantastic Four films (mindless fun if you will) but now that Norton is on board, it completely changes the outlook. Now there is potential for depth and serious dramatic weight… not that anyone wants much drama in a Hulk movie, especially after what Ang Lee did with the previous one. Norton is definitely up there on my list of favourite actors, and he is only going to raise the calibre of the entire production in my opinion. I still can’t say I really care much about the project in general (in my opinion Hulk is not that interesting), but this is definitely a big win for Marvel and everyone working on this film. The Incredible Hulk will head into production this summer in Toronto with a June 13, 2008 release date in mind.

Is Edward Norton the new Nicolas Cage?

Either way, I definitely think he’s a great actor, and he makes me excited about the movie. I loved the first Hulk movie, it might actually be my favourite movie of 2003, but I don’t mind more action. The action scenes in the first one were fucking kickass, so if they can achieve the same level of awesomeness it should be a great movie.

I will say though, that part of the stuff I liked about the first one was the details in the animation (subtle stuff like Hulk landing) and also the quiet nature to the movie. Like when he fights the military, you have a huge explosion but then you have him flying through the air in almost complete silence. I thought that was great stuff, and I really doubt any of that will be in this movie.

I’m hopeful though. If anything, it will be interesting to see what Edward Norton will do with it, AND if the Hulk will look different because they changed the actor.

  • I’m not sure I’d go as far as to say he’s the new Cage – he’s leagues above and beyond as far as I’m concerned.

And I’m with Sean, up until this point, I had little to no interest on the project but with Norton on board, I’m game.

  • I loved ang lees hulk and am really looking forward to this, but the writer who was involved in electra is writing this? That is not good news electra was one of the worst films i have ever seen and this news doesn’t inspire me with confidence.

I liked Ange Lee’s Hulk so I don’t see the need to re-do it, with or without Edward Norton.

Why not remake the Thunderbirds movie. Now THAT was bad.

I also like Ang Lee’s Hulk, but I never liked the CGI in that movie. I liked Eric Bana’s performance as Bruce Banner, but if there is one actor who can 1-up him, it would be Edward Norton.
