Cronenberg’s Scanners and The Fly To Get Remade

Another day, another remake announced. What else is new? It seems that Dimension Films have just greenlit a remake of David Cronenberg’s 1981 film Scanners, about a small underground group of humans with special psychic abilities. The new version will be directed by Darren Lynn Bousman (Saw II, Saw III) and written by David Goyer (Blade, Batman Begins). For once it’s nice to see them remaking something that’s not a straight-up horror film… although there are definitely some horror elements to it. If nothing else, the movie should serve as a great illustration of how far exploding head special effects have come over the years.

On a related note, it seems that another Cronenberg movie may be getting remade in the near future. An update of The Fly has been rumoured to be in the works for a while now, but recently Cronenberg himself revealed that Nicolas Cage is interested in taking over Jeff Goldblum’s skin. Great… another classic film turned to parody by the King of Cheese. Well, I guess when Nic Cage comes a knockin’, you really can’t argue. David Cronenberg claims he is also working on an opera based on The Fly. Now that would be pretty weird. Read all about it over at
