Although it may sound like sacrilege to some, Paramount is apparently getting serious about bringing more Godfather films to the big screen. And hey, if DePalma can do an Untouchables sequel, why not another Godfather film too? There are two new Godfather books that have come out in the past couple of years, so there’s already source material to draw from. The only potential stumbling point is the fact that these new books were not actually written by Mario Puzo (who died in 1999), but rather by a guy named Mark Winegardner. Still, both The Godfather Returns and the newly released The Godfather’s Revenge seem to be getting decent reviews so maybe we shouldn’t be so quick to judge?
The Godfather’s Revenge is a prequel, while The Godfather Returns supposedly takes place chronologically between The Godfather and The Godfather II. This could lead to casting complications if they want to bring back some of the original actors, but these books also introduce new characters as well. Is there enough interest in the Godfather “universe” to justify new movies that don’t focus on the Corleone family? I’m thinking a lot of the credibility will depend on whether or not Francis Ford Coppola is willing to be involved.» Related Link: Moviehole
