Oliver Stone Confirms Second 9/11 Movie “Jawbreaker”
A while back Oliver Stone hinted that he was interested in doing a second 9/11 movie, and now this week it has been confirmed through Variety. This time around Stone won’t be playing nice, however. The film, entitled Jawbreaker, will delve into more controversial material, specifically America’s response to 9/11 and the invasion of Afghanistan. The script will be reworked by Cyrus Nowrasteh (The Path to 9/11, The Day Reagan Was Shot), but the original draft was based on a memoir of ex-C.I.A. pointman Gary Bernsten, who co-ordinated the operation to remove the Taliban from power. Among Bernsten’s memoirs is a recollection of the day they actually had Bin Laden cornered in Tora Bora, and were told by the U.S. government to stand down!
I have to admit, I was ready to criticize Stone for refusing to let go of 9/11 (especially after the lukewarm public response to 9/11 films), but I am actually pretty interested in this. Stone says he’s not intending for it to be a political film, but he seems to understand that it will be a lot harder to avoid political leanings this time around. What do you think… will the general public be more accepting of Jawbreaker? Does it even matter?
