Well I definitely applaud you for keeping an open mind to both sides of the issues, and it's good to be aware of people's agendas.

I'd just like to point out that any movie worth making will, in fact, engage your emotions in some way... that's a part of storytelling, and movies are powerful vehicles precisely because they're so good at toying with emotions. I don't think it's underhanded for a filmmaker to use that to their advantage. That's the whole point of making a film. But as long as viewers such as yourself take things with a grain of salt and make the effort educate themselves further, I think movies like this can be both enlightening and entertaining at the same time.

Good discussion, thanks for the comments!

Oh you misunderstood. I'm not going to avoid this movie if I get the chance to see it. Afterall I do hold a decent amount of respect for you and your site and you gave it 4/4.

My point was not to trash the movie or to say its not worth being made. I'm just skeptical about these agendafilms. Fahrenheit 9/11, Guantanamo, An Incovenient Truth... None of them are interested in actually enlightening or even educating the viewer, as much as they are in targeting the lowest common denominator and appeal to people's emotions in order to gain support for their message.

That's all I have a problem with, this movie just seems to fall in the same category and so took the blame for it.

If I was in their position I don't think I'd turn it down either. An acclaimed filmmaker wants to help me tell my story to the world? I'd guess the money is probably a lot less of a factor than you think.

I'm not saying the movie is infallible and that I believe in it wholeheartedly. But it is a great film, and to avoid seeing it just because you think they were stupid, or because they are making money off of it seems a bit short-sighted. After all, if you're going to evaluate movies on that basis, I'm sure they need money more than Steven Spielberg or Ron Howard.

Yeah like I said I didn't see the movie...

I would imagine them saying something like "there was no feeling that U.S. would invade when we went there". If they were really there to fight for something, they could hardly say it openly.

And I never said they would get rich, just that they would make money. Which they obviously are, so their story can't be that traumatizing, that a paycheck can't make them relive it all over.

Well, in the movie they go to Pakistan for the wedding. It isn't quite clear why they decided to go from there to Afghanistan, I think it was hinted that possibly to try and "help out" whatever that means. However, they do say that when they went over there, the general feeling was that the U.S. wasn't going to bomb them.

As for them "making money" off the story... somehow I doubt this movie is going to make them rich.

I have not seen this movie, but I think the key thing to all of this is the line "not such a bright move in retrospect".

If you went to Afghanistan in 2001 and stayed there after 9/11 you must be some kind of idiot. I do not care how many weddings you think you might be having there.

Listen I think what is going on at Gitmo is as atrocious as the next guy. People are making valid arguments that it resembles concentration camps. The fact that the people are being held without charges alone is atrocious, let alone how they are being treated.

Still, watching incredible idiots make money of it doesn't sit well with me.
