Roger Avary To Direct Driver Video Game To Movie Adaptation
Director Roger Avary (Rules of Attraction, Killing Zoe) appears to be the next filmmaker eager to pigeonhole himself into doing feature film adaptations of video games, with an announcement this week that he will be writing and directing a big screen version of Atari’s Driver series. This comes hot on the heels of his work as screenwriter for the Silent Hill movie, which hits theatres this weekend, and before anyone goes accusing the guy of being the next Uwe Boll I think we’ll have to wait and see how that turns out. It just might be the first decent video game movie. As for Driver, I’m afraid I can’t say I have much interest in this. The original Driver game was released on the Playstation back in 1999, and the series has since evolved into something of a Grand Theft Auto clone. Unlike Silent Hill, this is a game that doesn’t have much of a rich story to draw from, and the movie will probably end up like something more akin to The Transporter.
