Wachowski Brothers To Direct New Conan Movie?

Here’s an interesting rumour that’s currently being floated around courtesy of an Arnold Schwarzenegger fan site called, appropriately enough, The Arnold Fans. There has been much talk as of late about a new Conan movie and whether or not Arnold would (or could) be involved. Original Conan The Barbarian director John Milius was at one time attached to direct, but has since fallen by the wayside, also leaving a big question mark as to who might step up and direct the next movie based on Robert E. Howard’s series of books. Word on the street is that Warner Bros want The Wachowski Brothers to write and direct King Conan: Crown of Iron aka Conan The Conqueror. While this may seem like a strange choice, the Brothers were apparently in talks to produce this movie back in 2004, although at the time they had disagreed with Milius’ vision. With Milius out of the picture, perhaps Conan will indeed mark their return to the director’s chair. So does this mean we will see Conan smiting his enemies in bullet-time? At this point it’s still just a rumour, but I’d say it’s not as far fetched as it might seem.

i cant see arnold doing this, i think he is too into the political thang. there was a rumour that The Rock was going to continue the series, but since he did The Scorpion King, i dont see him doing this one.

  • I don’t care who they use, as long as he’s right for the part. I’d like to see this movie more gritty and serious than the last one. Gladiator/Braveheart with a sprikle of 13th Warrior.

Yeah, this would be a big mistake for the Wachowski’s doing a Conan movie right after VforVendetta. Just doesn’t seem to fit them. I mean Conan is so obsolete. Wachowski’s movies always have a significant underlying message.

Wachowski’s should have better projects to look forward to, but not this Conan Crap.

  • Interesting Patricia left the very same comment on my site too!

I don’t think Conan is departing too much from what the W-Bro’s have done before, and what if it does, do they want to stick with the same style and genre as they always have? I would be looking to diversify, and Conan isn’t that far away.

There’s also something to be said about not looking at what’s been done before and thinking what differences these guys could bring to the film. They could produce a whole different kind of Conan, and with the Studio looking for a few Conan films out of this franchise then it might just be a good idea for them to go a new route.

  • I think there’s only one person that would be perfect for the new Conan movie…

    PAUL VERHOEVEN.

Think about it, the man has somehow gotten away with EXCESSIVE sexuality and violence in the majority of his movies. Starship Troopers, which could easily have been turned into a PG-13 merchandising cash-grab, was FULL of gore and boobs. Also, Verhoeven’s work with Basil Poledouris on Robocop and Starship Troopers somehow makes it feel just right. However, if Verhoeven is too busy being dirty and dutch, then i would be more then thrilled with Don Coscarelli (Beatmaster, Phantasm, Bubba Ho-Tep). Although maybe that choice is a little too obvious? And he’s definitely not the big time name that a studio would probably want attatched to this project.

As for casting, Conan should be played by Jouko Ahola. He was the World’s Strongest Man in 1997 & 1999 and was critically acclaimed for his role in Werner Herzog’s ‘Invincible’. I think with a push, he could be the next Arnold.

Oh god i sound like a fanboy.

  • Speaking of Verhoeven, I was looking into what he’s been up to lately, apparently he’s doing some sort of serious WWII drama. I shudder to think that he may be “maturing” as a director.

  • That’s perfect for him though because Starship Troopers was basically a WWII drama with bugs.

  • It just sounds like there won’t be much action in it.

“Black Book, scripted by Verhoeven and his longtime collaborator Gerard Soeteman, is the story of a young Jewish woman who joins the Resistance and narrowly survives the war in Holland, but is falsely denounced as a traitor. Entangled in a web of someone else’s deceit, she sets out to discover who betrayed her.”

I’d rather see the Wachowski’s finish there project with Sxean Lee-David. The movie I think was called “DreamScapesAxis” or “The Axis” something like that.

Last I heard they were going to produce and direct that film then changed there minds at the last minute to do V for Vendetta, in lieu of the Bush Administration.

Well, that’s what I read from an official source on the Internet way back then. Just about as official as these rumours anyway.
