SMS Sugar Man: First Movie To Be Shot On Cell Phone Cameras?
Here’s an interesting way to get some attention for your movie: instead of shooting it on film, or even digital video, how about shooting it entirely with cell phone cameras? It might sound like an obvious gimmick, but what if cell phones were worked into the story so that there’s a logical reason for them to be used? SMS Sugar Man claims to be the first feature-length movie shot entirely with cell phone cameras (a claim that is being disputed by various experimental filmmakers who have been using them for years), and the story revolves around a pimp and two high-class prostitutes caught in a bizarre love triangle of sorts. Shot in South Africa for approximately $164,100, director Aryan Kaganof says that the cell phone is a cheap medium that makes the film industry accessible to people in less wealthy countries. The movie was shot entirely using Sony Ericsson w900i 3G handsets, and will soon be released to cell phones in 3-minute installments over the course of a month. He has also transferred the footage to 35mm film so it can be shown in theatres later this year. I’m pretty interested to see a trailer or some promo footage so we can get an idea of how good this actually looks.
