Kevin Hart Steps Down as Oscar Host

Well that didn’t take long. Less than two days after Kevin Hart officially confirmed that he would be hosting the 2019 Academy Awards, he has already stepped down. It all has to do with controversial tweets from his past (an increasingly common occurrence) that appear to be anti-gay and make use of homophobic language. Hart was supposedly offered the opportunity to apologize for these comments, but instead he chose to drop out as Oscar host. He made the announcement last night on Instagram:

It’s all a bit strange considering that he did sort of apologize in the end, he just chose to do it on his own terms. However, he took a while to get there, which is not really endearing him to his critics. Perhaps his decision is for the best considering that the controversy would probably have continued to follow him either way. Now the Academy is heading back to the drawing board to find a new host. Who would you like to see host the Oscars?

Around the Web:

  • I would suggest Film Junk hosts, but the Academy might go through the back catalogue and find some less than nice things said about the Oscars. You blew that chance guys!!

  • Maybe that guy from The Cosby Show that works at Trader Joes now, give him a shot.

  • Deven Science

They should ask James Gunn. I’m sure his past is clean, so he would be a great host.

  • Beat_C

    good riddance.

  • Matt the Kiwi

My choice would be The Rock simply to see Franks head explode as he attempts to make EVERYONE like him. Either that or Sam Harris.

  • Dirk Gently

I’m sure choosing his integrity as a comedian over hosting some shitty, irrelevant awards show was about the easiest decision he’s ever had to make. Good for him.

    That’s a good call

Hugh Jackman was good I thought, could get him again. This reminds me of an old Filmjunk idea, the Filmjunk Re-Awards show. Where you look back at the oscars from ten years ago and see how things stack up now. Could do that the week before the Oscars perhaps
