Film Junk Premium Podcast #67: The Predator Franchise

predatorpremium

Time to let ol’ Painless out of the bag. With the release of Shane Black’s The Predator in theatres this past weekend, it was finally time for us to revisit the often requested Predator franchise… and yes, for better or worse (definitely worse), that includes the Alien vs. Predator movies too. On this episode we discuss a variety of topics including the capabilities and limitations of Predator technology, the specifics of their moral code, the relative importance of Arnold Schwarzenegger’s presence and some of the expanded lore surrounding the movies. So is Predator 2 a terrible sequel or does it make some solid additions to the mythology? How the hell do you pronounce Yautja? Where did the Alien vs Predator concept first originate? Which Film Junk member is an unabashed AvP addict and who is the true Pred Head? Get to the chopper and download this month’s premium podcast below.

I see more of a connection between the Terminator franchise and the Alien franchise. The first film is a horror film, the follow up was an action blockbuster after which the series devolved into sub-par sequels.

The female equivalent of “phallic” is “yonic”.

  • parapa

Only up to Predator 2, but I’m shocked by Frank’s agenda on this one. Its a super solid movie, fun, goofy, ultraviolent, and the cast rules.

  • pcch7

Maybe some narrative in the absence of Reed to defend the AVP movies.

  • pcch7

There’s gotta be a fair few biggish franchises left to cover. Pirates, Rambo, Blade, Police Academy, Home Alone, Saw, Bourne, more Bond. Then there’s the likes of Underworld and Resident Evil, although I suppose Jay might off himself in that case

  • devolutionary

For the first time on this rewatch I actually enjoyed Predator 2 as a standalone film rather than a slightly inferior sequel. Being a now well-established Joel Silver production, it’s easier to recognize that it’s essentially a buddy cop movie until the third act.

  • devolutionary

Predator is the perfect subversion of a prototypical 80s action movie like Commando. Everything that worked in Commando is essentially engineered in reverse here. McTiernan sure had a heck of a run from Predator until the late 90s.

  • Mister Quigley Jr.

    Oh yeah, definitely a buy.

  • Fletcher Thomas

Ive replayed the ‘was your Fox logo stretched’ bit half a dozen times already.

Jay and Frank are comedy gold. They’re some kind of modern day Abbot and Costello.

“Cuther other factoids. Who’s the voice of predator, Frank?”

    “I don’t know.”

    “Sorry?”

  • Jake

Agreed. The man made Predator, Die Hard and The Hunt For Red October in the span of three years (!). His entire filmography is really solid. The only one I have a problem with was the Rollerball remake. I even liked Basic. It would be nice to see a comeback but I guess it is kind of hard once you are blacklisted.

  • Sean

    Yonic / Yautja… coincidence?

  • devolutionary

Yeah, I’m mostly with you, but I think there’s major writing and production issues with Basic. It oddly even looks cheap with the action. I have a soft spot for the mystery in Nomads, but the horrible Brosnan acting en Francais and pacing really grinds.

  • Colin

Heat to evade heat vision had already been used in the 70s Westworld film

  • pcch7

Kinda wanna rewatch Basic, been so long

  • Matt the Kiwi

I still think he is the epitome of action directing. The way he moves the camera and the composition of his shots is damn near perfect…until Rollerball :-(

  • Matt the Kiwi

Sean is right. Predator is surely a 5 star action film. The directing, the score, the cast, the creature design, even the story subverted the typical action narrative of the time…it’s all top of its game stuff. Frank / Jay – go back and watch it AGAIN and adjust your ratings accordingly. Bunch of slack-jawed faggots in this premium. This film will make you a god damned sexual Tyrannosaurus!

Does anyone have a link to those spread algos? Asking for my cousin.
