Mel Gibson to Direct WWII Naval Thriller Destroyer

After his latest film Hacksaw Ridge earned a handful of Oscar nominations including Best Director, it seems safe to say that Mel Gibson is no longer blacklisted in Hollywood and his personal issues have mostly been forgiven (or at least forgotten). Gibson also appeared in Daddy’s Home 2 last year and has upcoming roles in S. Craig Zahler’s Dragged Across Concrete and Joe Carnahan’s Boss Level (among others). That being said, fans of Gibson’s work behind the camera are eager to find out what his next project as a director will be and this week we may have an answer. It looks like it won’t be that rumoured Passion of the Christ sequel but rather another WWII movie. Hit the jump for more info.

According to THR, Mel Gibson is attached to direct Destroyer, a World War II naval war movie from Hollywood Gang Productions. The movie is based on the book Hell From the Heavens: The Epic Story of the USS Laffey and World War II’s Greatest Kamikaze Attack by John Wukovits and it revolves around a naval crew defending themselves from 22 kamikaze attacks on April 16, 1945. The script was written by Rosalind Ross (Matador), who also happens to be Gibson’s longtime girlfriend.

We are hearing that this will likely be his next movie as a director but the timing may be dependent on the filming of WB’s The Six Billion Dollar Man. Mark Wahlberg is starring in that film and is now courting Mel Gibson for a supporting role after starring opposite him in Daddy’s Home 2. Gibson was previously rumoured on the director shortlist for Suicide Squad 2 and has also been talking about a sequel to The Passion of the Christ but that does not seem to be on the docket for the immediate future. Are you looking forward to another WWII movie from Mel Gibson?
