Harley Quinn / Birds of Prey Movie Gets a Director

Once again this week we are getting evidence that Warner Brothers simply cannot decide what they want to do with the DC Universe. Following the success of Suicide Squad a couple of years ago, we heard that there would be both a direct sequel to that movie and a Harley Quinn-centric spin-off called Gotham City Sirens. Over time, several other Batman-related movies were being announced as possibilities including a Nightwing movie, a Batgirl movie, a Joker prequel (produced by Martin Scorsese), and a Harley Quinn / Joker spin-off (not to mention the next Batman solo movie, assuming that is still a thing). Now this week it looks as though a handful of those projects are off the table as Harley Quinn will reportedly be featured as the villain of a Birds of Prey movie instead. Hit the jump for the full scoop.

According to Deadline, director Cathy Yan (Dead Pigs) has been hired to direct a “currently-untitled DC girl gang movie said to take its cues from Birds of Prey.” Margot Robbie is attached to star with Harley Quinn reportedly being the main villain, while other characters including Batgirl and the Birds of Prey expected to make appearances. The script was written by Christina Hodson (Bumblebee), who was recently announced as the writer of the upcoming Batgirl solo movie after Joss Whedon’s departure.

From what we are hearing, both the Harley Quinn / Joker spin-off and the Gotham City Sirens movies are being shelved in favour of this project. Gavin O’Connor is still attached to direct Suicide Squad 2, however. The Birds of Prey are a female superhero team who have previously included Oracle / Batgirl, Black Canary, Huntress, Catwoman, Hawkgirl, Poison Ivy and Katana (who previously appeared in Suicide Squad). Are you looking forward to a Birds of Prey movie?
