American Animals Trailer: A Heist Movie from the Director of The Imposter

After making a name for himself with his innovative documentary work (including the acclaimed 2012 film The Imposter), Bart Layton is now making the transition to narrative features while still blurring the line between fact and fiction. American Animals is a heist movie based on the true story of four students from Kentucky’s Transylvania University who attempt to pilfer rare books from their school (dubbed the “Transy Book Heist”). They supposedly based their plan partially from repeat viewings of Hollywood heist flicks, but if that wasn’t meta enough, the movie also intercuts interviews with the real kids who were involved. With a cast that includes Evan Peters (X-Men: Days of Future Past), Barry Keoghan (The Killing of a Sacred Deer), Blake Jenner (Everybody Wants Some!!) and Udo Kier, this earned rave reviews at Sundance and SXSW earlier this year. American Animals hits select theatres on June 1st; check out the trailer after the jump and see what you think.
