Damian Lewis to Play Former Toronto Mayor Rob Ford in Run This Town

In one of the strangest movie-related news stories to come out this week, former Toronto mayor Rob Ford is apparently getting the Hollywood biopic treatment and the man who will play him is none other than Homeland star Damian Lewis. Lewis is being fitted with extensive prosthetics in order to pull it off. Ford is best known for his outspoken public persona and for becoming embroiled in a major scandal in 2014 when a video surfaced of him smoking crack cocaine. He was diagnosed with cancer soon afterward and passed away in 2016. Hit the jump for more details.

According to THR, Damian Lewis will star in the upcoming film Run This Town as a politician who “doesn’t play by the rules.” The story will center on the final year of his mayoral term when a reporter (played by Ben Platt) attempts to expose a major scandal. Nina Dobrev and Mena Massoud will play the politician’s aides, who attempt to keep the story suppressed. Scott Speedman and Jennifer Ehle also co-star.

The movie is being written and directed by first-time filmmaker Ricky Tollman and is currently in production in Toronto. It is unclear how close it will stick to the truth, but it is being reported that Lewis will indeed play Rob Ford while many of the supporting characters will be fictional. It also appears that the movie is taking a fairly serious tone as opposed to something more comedic. Do you think the time is right for a Rob Ford movie?

Serious tone? I hope that doesn’t mean they’re taking out the Jamaican patois stuff.
