Ava DuVernay to Direct New Gods Movie for DC

We already learned earlier this week that Spike Lee might be directing a superhero movie for Sony, but now it looks like another prominent African-American director is about to enter the DC Extended Universe. Ava DuVernay just directed A Wrinkle in Time for Disney, and although you might expect that to lead to a gig within the Marvel Cinematic Universe instead, Warner Brothers are once again honing in on their talent. This won’t be a typical superhero movie, however; she is reportedly attached to direct a New Gods movie featuring the powerful cosmic beings from the planets New Genesis and Apokolips. Hit the jump for more details.

According to Variety, Ava DuVernay will direct New Gods for Warner Brothers, based on the DC Comics series created by Jack Kirby in 1971. The New Gods are divided into good and evil factions living on the idyllic New Genesis and dystopian Apokolips respectively. Darkseid, who has already been loosely introduced in Zack Snyder’s Justice League, is the lord of Apokolips, while Highfather is the ruler of the planet New Genesis. Other main characters include Orion, the son of Darkseid who was raised by Highfather, and Mister Miracle, the son of Highfather who was raised by Darkseid.

DuVernay has previously mentioned that her favourite superhero character of all time is Big Barda, a warrior in Darkseid’s army who falls in love with Mister Miracle. It is not entirely clear if the New Gods movie will tie into the existing DC movies but Deadline is reporting that it will be more of an unconnected standalone film. The script is currently being written by Kario Salem (Chasing Mavericks, The Score) in collaboration with DuVernay. Are you looking forward to a New Gods movie?

If you told me that image was from Infinity War, I wouldn’t have known the difference.

We’ve only seen the Apokolips side in the Snyder films, so she might be able to go full Wrinkle of Time bright on the good guys and still fit in. Hopefully that’s what they want her for.
