Monday Morning Box Office Report: Fifty Shades Finishes on Top

Pre-Valentine’s Day crowds took the final installment of the Fifty Shades series to the top of the box office over the weekend, although the numbers would seem to indicate that female moviegoers are no longer bringing dates to these movies. Fifty Shades Freed had a $38.8 million start, pushing the franchise to over $1 billion globally but continuing the decline from both previous films which debuted with $85 million and $46 million respectively. The weekend’s other new releases opened in second place and third place with Peter Rabbit pulling in a decent $25 million followed by Clint Eastwood’s The 15:17 to Paris with a somewhat disappointing $12.6 million (no American Sniper effect here). Meanwhile Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle and The Greatest Showman both continued to draw in their eighth week of release, once again remaining in the top 5. Overall it was a fairly slow weekend but that will change next weekend with the arrival of Marvel’s Black Panther.
