John Wick Director in Talks for Fast & Furious Spin-Off

Some members of the Fast & Furious family were up in arms last year when it was announced that Universal would delay the next main installment in the series in favour of a spin-off focused on Dwayne Johnson and Jason Statham. At the time, there was speculation that the move was related to a scheduling conflict with a potential director for Fast & Furious 9 (possibly Justin Lin), and although we still don’t know who will direct that movie, we do know who might direct the spin-off. We are hearing this week that one of the directors behind the original John Wick is about to jump in the driver’s seat. Hit the jump for more details.

According to THR, director David Leitch is in early talks to direct the untitled Fast & Furious spin-off for Universal. Last year it was being reported that Shane Black was also one of the potential candidates for the job, but we don’t know if any other names were on the shortlist. Long-time franchise writer and producer Chris Morgan is penning the script, which will be a team-up between Diplomatic Security Service agent Luke Hobbs (Dwayne Johnson) and British military officer turned mercenary Deckard Shaw (Jason Statham).

David Leitch has already made the jump to a big budget studio project with Deadpool 2, which is now currently in post-production, and he also directed Atomic Blonde starring Charlize Theron. Before he and Chad Stahelski directed John Wick, they were stunt co-ordinators and Leitch was also a second unit director for recent blockbusters like Jurassic World and Captain America: Civil War. Do you think he is a good choice to direct the Fast & Furious spin-off?
