Joaquin Phoenix in Talks for Martin Scorsese’s Joker Movie

The future of the so-called DC Extended Universe may be looking as uncertain as ever following Justice League, but Warner Brothers is continuing to turn heads with some of the talent they are landing for their other standalone comic book projects. Last summer they announced an inexplicable yet potentially exciting solo movie that would focus on the origins of The Joker with Martin Scorsese attached to produce and Todd Phillips attached to co-write and direct. The project supposedly blindsided Jared Leto who was still expected to reprise his role as The Joker from Suicide Squad and it left fans divided over whether it was even a good idea. But now things are getting more surreal because they’ve reportedly managed to convince a respected A-list actor to star. Could this be the miracle that the DC Universe sorely needs?

According to Variety, Joaquin Phoenix has agreed to star in an untitled Joker movie from Todd Phillips and Martin Scorsese. Negotiations are not yet underway, but Phoenix is reportedly the top choice for the role and after mulling it over he has decided to move forward. Frequent Scorsese collaborator Leonardo DiCaprio was previously rumoured for the part but it is unclear if he ever gave it any serious consideration.

Landing a big name was essential to getting this project a studio greenlight and it now appears that they have it. Phoenix is an inspired choice but also a bit of a surprise given how reluctant he has been to get involved with big budget studio films. He was close to signing on to play Doctor Strange for Marvel a few years back but he ultimately walked away. Do you think Joaquin Phoenix will make a great Joker?

He’s too old to play the Joker in an origin story, isn’t he?

Wow the DCU is a mess! A mess!

Under normal circumstances I love of the choice of JP being the joker, but the universe is such a mess should I care even now? I mean MS and TP great filmmakers casting JP for the Joker should be great fantastic news but with the DCU such a mess and all the characters in weird flux I’m not sure I’m intersted anymore.

The DCEU is a mess, but I don’t think this is part of it. I’m ok with WB putting the brakes on the DCEU and trying off-shoots like this. I mean this could be garbage as well, but at least it will be it’s own thing and won’t have to cram in Flash one-liners or weird glares from Aquaman,

the less jared leto, the better.

Joaquin Phoenix is a great choice for Joker, but the idea of a Joker origin movie is a bad idea regardless of whether or not it’s part of the DCEU.
