Monday Morning Box Office Report: The Maze Runner Solves Jumanji

After three weeks at the top of the box office, Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle finally met its match as Maze Runner: The Death Cure vaulted into first place over the weekend. The YA sequel opened with $23.5 million, a bit less than the previous two installments made, which was probably an unfortunate side effect of the fact that Dylan O’Brien’s on-set injury delayed the movie by almost a year. Jumanji made another $16.4 million while Scott Cooper’s Hostiles jumped into third place after going wide with $10.2 million. The Greatest Showman continued to hover in the top 5, having now quietly made an impressive $259 million worldwide, followed by Steven Spielberg’s The Post. The other story of the week was Padmaavat, which opened in tenth place with $4.2 million, breaking the record for a Bollywood opening in North America.
