What We Do in the Shadows TV Reboot Coming to FX

Taika Waititi may now be known as the director of Thor: Ragnarok but it was his lower budget Kiwi comedies that helped him land that blockbuster gig. In particular, the vampire mockumentary What We Do in the Shadows (which he co-wrote and co-directed with Jemaine Clement) was a big hit and successful enough to spark development on a sequel (tentatively titled We’re Wolves) and a TV spin-off (Paranormal Event Response Unit). What we didn’t know until this week, however, is that there was another TV project in the works, this one seemingly an episodic reboot of the original film’s concept. Hit the jump for more details.

According to Deadline, FX has ordered to pilot a half-hour comedy series basedon the 2014 film What We Do in the Shadows. Jemaine Clement is attached as writer and executive producer while Waititi will direct and executive produce as well. Kayvan Novak (Four Lions), Matt Berry (The IT Crowd), Natasia Demetriou (Stath Lets Flats) and Harvey Guillen (The Internship) are all attached to star.

As noted, this is not to be confused with the previously announced spin-off series based on Wellington police officers Karen and Mike, which is coming to New Zealand channel TVNZ 2. The FX series appears to be a loose remake of the movie repackaged for a U.S. audience, although you have to wonder what is the point when so many people have already seen it. I suppose the concept could still make for a decent enough continuing comedy series, and at least Clement and Waititi are still involved even though they aren’t starring. ‘We’re Wolves’ may be the greatest title in the history of film. That’s brilliant.

It’s a bit too famous to recast, I’d’ve thunk.
