The New Mutants and Gambit Delayed, Kitty Pryde Movie Might Happen

With three movies from the X-Men universe scheduled to hit theatres in 2018, this was shaping up to be the year that Fox was finally ready to go toe-to-toe with Marvel in terms of the sheer number of major comic book movies planned. Alas, it just wasn’t meant to be; this week we are hearing that last minute changes will leave their slate a bit more spread out than originally planned. In particular, Josh Boone’s The New Mutants has been pushed back to 2019, leaving just Deadpool 2 and X-Men: Dark Phoenix on track for this year. The studio has also delayed Gambit, but fans should be pleased to hear that Deadpool 2 will actually be moving up a couple of weeks. Hit the jump for more details.

According to THR, Fox announced this week that The New Mutants is getting a ten-month delay, moving from April 13th, 2018 all the way to Feb. 22th, 2019. Meanwhile, fresh off the news that Gore Verbinski has dropped out as the director of Gambit, that movie will shift from Feb. 14th, 2019, to June 7th, 2019. (Verbinski is the third director to have left the project after Doug Liman and Rupert Wyatt.) Deadpool 2 is moving up to May 18th, where it will debut one week ahead of Solo: A Star Wars Movie.

Word on the street is that the shuffle was partially necessary in order to avoid a conflict in some overseas markets where The New Mutants and Deadpool 2 would have ended up in theaters at the same time. However, there are also reports that The New Mutants was deemed to be not scary enough and that they want to fully embrace the horror elements after the massive success of last year’s It. Collider is also reporting that Fox is developing a Kitty Pryde movie as one of their last X-Men movies before Disney merger takes effect and that Deadpool director Tim Miller may be involved. Are you looking forward to any of these upcoming Fox comic book movies?
