Monday Morning Box Office Report: Jumanji Still King of the Jungle

Despite strong openings from a couple of new releases, Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle maintained its status at the top of the box office food chain this past weekend, adding another $27 million to its total. The reboot / sequel also opened in China over the weekend and it has now earned $666 million worldwide. Steven Spielberg’s The Post jumped up to second place after a nationwide expansion taking in $18.6 million while the Liam Neeson thriller The Commuter opened in third with a respectable $13.45 million. That’s a lot less than Non-Stop made back in 2014 ($26 million), but more than Run All Night did a year later ($11 million). Insidious: The Last Key and The Greatest Showman rounded out the top 5. Elsewhere, Paddington 2 and Proud Mary had somewhat lacklustre debuts, opening in 7th and 8th place respectively. Weak marketing and lack of awareness could have been a factor, or also just as likely, simply too much competition.
