Monday Morning Box Office Report: Jumanji and Insidious Overthrow Star Wars: The Last Jedi

Although Star Wars: The Last Jedi has remained at the top the box office for the past 3 weeks, it’s no secret that Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle has also been quietly pulling in big money for Sony over the holidays. This weekend that movie finally knocked Star Wars from its perch to claim first place with $36 million as its worldwide total reaches $519 million. Blumhouse sequel Insidious: The Last Key also debuted ahead of Star Wars: The Last Jedi, believe it or not, getting off to a solid $29 million start. It would appear that horror fans are not yet growing tired of the franchise. Star Wars fell to third, although it is now the thirteenth highest grossing movie of all time worldwide and is likely to jump at least a few more spots on that list before all is said and done. The Greatest Showman and Pitch Perfect 3 rounded out the top 5. Next weekend things could get messy with four new movies opening in wide release.

1. Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle — $36M
2. Insidious: The Last Key — $29.3M
3. Star Wars: The Last Jedi — $23.6M
4. The Greatest Showman — $13.8M
5. Pitch Perfect 3 — $10.2M
6. Ferdinand — $7.7M
7. Molly’s Game — $7.0M
8. Darkest Hour — $6.4M
9. Coco — $5.5M
10. All the Money in the World — $3.6M
