Ridley Scott in Talks for Disney’s The Merlin Saga

Having just directed two movies in 2017 (one of which required extensive last minute reshoots), you might expect Ridley Scott to be enjoying some well-deserved downtime right about now. But that’s just not the kind of guy he is. He is already busy setting up his next project, and believe it or not, it won’t be another Alien movie. Officially, the future of the Alien franchise remains up in the air, although he insists there is at least one more installment on the way. In the meantime, Scott may be jumping over to Disney to helm their adaptation of The Merlin Saga. Hit the jump for more info.

According to Variety, Ridley Scott is in talks to direct the first installment in The Merlin Saga, a planned series of films based on the books by T.A. Barron. Long-time Peter Jackson collaborator Philippa Boyens (The Lord of the Rings Trilogy, The Hobbit Trilogy) wrote the script. It is believed that this would be Scott’s next film and that he would also produce through Scott Free Productions.

This is one of two movies currently in development at Disney based on Arthurian legend; the other is a live-action adaptation of the animated film The Sword in the Stone. Warner Brothers also tried to launch a franchise last year with Guy Ritchie’s King Arthur: Legend of the Sword, but it bombed at the box office, earning just $148 million worldwide. Whether this will fare better remains to be seen, but Scott has certainly found success with historical action epics before. Would you like to see Ridley Scott take on The Merlin Saga for Disney?

Can Scott please just let Neil Blomkamp make his Aliens sequel. So bummed that Prometheus put an end to that. It would have been epic. Can’t say I’m interested in Merlin. It sounds like it would put Scott back into the territory of films like Robin Hood, Kingdom of Heaven and Exodus. Not a fan of those ones, although I’ve heard the director’s cut of Kingdom of Heaven is worth a watch.
