Monday Morning Box Office Report: Star Wars: The Last Jedi Hits $1 Billion

Happy New Year everyone! As the final hours of 2017 were ticking away last night, Star Wars: The Last Jedi managed to cross $1 billion worldwide and it now stands as the third biggest movie of 2017 worldwide (behind Beauty and the Beast and The Fate of the Furious). It topped the final moviegoing weekend of 2017 with $52.4 million, just barely staying ahead of the holiday hit Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle, which was a close second with an estimated $50.6 million. Some have tried to cast The Last Jedi as a box office disappointment after its steep second weekend drop, but it seems to be doing just fine (it was probably never going to top The Force Awakens anyway). In third place, Pitch Perfect 3 earned another $17.8 million although it is trailing behind its predecessor as well. The Greatest Showman and Ferdinand rounded out the top 5. Meanwhile Ridley Scott’s All the Money in the World opened in seventh place with $5.5 million, but it actually opened on Christmas Day and has now has grossed $12.6 million domestically.
