New to Theatres This Weekend: Star Wars: The Last Jedi, Ferdinand, Beyond Skyline

At long last, the next chapter in the Skywalker Saga is upon us as Star Wars: The Last Jedi roars into theatres. The highly anticipated sequel is looking to become the fourth movie ever to open with $200+ million, but can it top Star Wars: The Force Awakens? That might be a tall order. There is one other movie in wide release this week as Fox offers up some family-friendly counterprogramming with the animated film Ferdinand. In select theatres and on VOD, we also have another, slightly less anticipated sci-fi sequel in Beyond Skyline as well as the Patricia Arquette / Rainn Wilson comedy Permanent. I think I know what everyone is watching this weekend. So what did you think of Star Wars: The Last Jedi?

Saw Last Jedi yesterday. Very curious what the star ratings are gonna be.

  • I’m just hoping the discussion falls more on what they liked than nitpicking stuff like Force Awakens. I give it a 4.5/5. The overall flaws lied in the smaller characters and the side stories, but there was plenty of good stuff there too. The main character stuff was strong and I love the core of the new cast.

  • Nirwin

Last Jedi was pretty bad imo. Inconsistent characters, pointless story-threads, plot-holes galore, and the same old boring CGI-heavy battles. The discrepancy between Rotten Tomatoes critic and audiences scores should give Frank plenty to talk about.

You saw it, so what is your rating?

  • j-diggle

I’d love it if you guys did a review of Ferdinand instead of Star Wars.

    Screw the haters. PORGS RULE.

I am really looking forward to the film junk review. I thought the movie had some good moments but is kind of a mess… and pretty much makes me feel like they have no big thematic idea behind this trilogy.

Also it is sad to see the star wars movies become more and more like a marvel films with the out of place humor in this movie.

  • Bandit Manatee

Yeah I mean I don’t think the movie sucks completely but 93% rating better than empire? I think its totally clear now that the Disney hype machine is in play

  • Brian.M

It’s pretty all over the place. What the hell happened??

  • Nirwin

I want to eat one so bad.

    Did someone say PAYOLA?

Just watched Force Awakens for the first time last night. It comes off like fan fiction or a choose your own adventure book. What a pile.

  • Jameson

I gave it a 4 but it might go up on a rewatch. It’s definitely polarizing (as I’m sure you can see just being on the internet).
