Monday Morning Box Office Report: Coco Coasts to Third Win, The Disaster Artist Surprises

It was another uneventful weekend at the multiplex, allowing Pixar’s Coco to quietly top the box office for the third week in a row. The animated film added another $18.3 million to Disney’s coffers and has now made $389 million worldwide. It seems to be following the same trajectory as Moana and with the lack of family films in theatres this month it should continue to make money well into the new year. Once again, Justice League and Wonder remained in second and third place respectively while James Franco’s The Disaster Artist had a very successful expansion, jumping into fourth place with $6.4 million. Thor: Ragnarok rounded out the top 5. Elsewhere, Just Getting Started bombed, opening in a distant tenth place with just $3.2 million. Next weekend the masses will once again descend on theatres as Star Wars: The Last Jedi brings in yet another massive haul for Disney.

1. Coco — $18.3M
2. Justice League — $9.6M
3. Wonder — $8.5M
4. The Disaster Artist — $6.4M
5. Thor: Ragnarok — $6.3M
6. Daddy’s Home 2 — $6M
7. Murder on the Orient Express — $5.1M
8. The Star — $3.7M
9. Lady Bird — $3.5M
10. Just Getting Started — $3.2M

I wonder if the studio cost The Disaster Artist an opening weekend win by not expanding enough. It seemed to be getting a lot of word of mouth, but opened in less than 1000 theaters. It was playing in two theaters me, but every showing was sold out. Reminds me of the Borat release. It will expand more in the next week, but certainly won’t come number 1 with Jedi hitting theaters. I feel like it could have easily done more than 20 million if it was on more screens this weekend.
