Rian Johnson Planning New Star Wars Trilogy, Live-Action Star Wars TV Show Also Happening

Before it was announced that J.J. Abrams would be replacing Colin Trevorrow as director of Star Wars: Episode IX, there was a lot of speculation that Rian Johnson might take the reins instead. After all, there were once rumours that he would help come up with the story for Episode IX and the higher-ups at Disney and Lucasfilm seemed very happy with his work on Star Wars: The Last Jedi. Johnson soon claimed that he had no interest in directing the follow-up anyway, but now this week we have learned that he will be returning to write and direct another Star Wars movie after all. This one will kick off a whole new trilogy in the Star Wars universe. Here’s an excerpt from the official press release:

“Lucasfilm is excited to announce that Johnson will create a brand-new Star Wars trilogy, the first of which he is also set to write and direct, with longtime collaborator Ram Bergman onboard to produce.

As writer-director of The Last Jedi, Johnson conceived and realized a powerful film of which Lucasfilm and Disney are immensely proud. In shepherding this new trilogy, which is separate from the episodic Skywalker saga, Johnson will introduce new characters from a corner of the galaxy that Star Wars lore has never before explored.”

So it sounds like this new trilogy will not encompass the inevitable Episode X, XI and XII, and will probably not feature characters from the so-called Skywalker saga either. In other news, Disney CEO Bob Iger announced that a Star Wars live-action TV series is in the works and will be available exclusively on their subscription streaming service. George Lucas had been developing a live-action Star Wars TV show in the mid to late 2000s called Star Wars: Underworld, although it ended up being shelved for budgetary reasons. It is unclear if this is a continuation of that project or something completely new. Are you looking forward to a new standalone Star Wars trilogy and a live-action TV show?

Hmmm is frank going to double down on the fact that Disney believes The Last Jedi is shit now? I think giving rian a new trilogy probably shows confidence.

I’m wondering if this means the stand alone films are on hold going forward after Solo? I also wonder even though the skywalker saga is over will the new trilogy take place after IX? I think it would make sense. Disney probably wants to focus on building a new era of Star Wars from the ground up.

oh god I hope it’s set after IX. The last thing we need is another prequel trilogy.

What I expect will be Frank’s new narrative: They are bringing him back to preemptively address what they expect will be a slew of people criticizing their decision!
